"Welding Helmet Having An Automatic Lighting System"
FROM THE BARNYARD TO THE SHIPYARD, FROM THE GARAGE TO THE FACTORY, THIS INVENTION WILL BE A GREAT AID FOR ALL WELDERS!
"I am a retired electronic engineer living in a location where there is a heavy machine and manufacturing base. Metal welding of all types is a big part of the state's revenue. When I moved here I started getting requests from professional welders to modify their welding helmets with a lighting system that would come on and go off as the helmet lowered and raised."
WHY THIS INVENTION IS NEEDED: Welders using the latest design of "Auto Darkening" helmets have trouble seeing the work in front of them when the helmet is dropped into position. This is especially true when the weld must be placed in a dark area shaded by equipment, therefore, an auxiliary light source or an assistant must be available. A MIG welder cannot hold his/her own light as two hands are required to properly brace and position the welding gun. Also welders must wear heavy gloves so they don't want to be taking them off and putting then back on to operate a light switch.
ADVANTAGES OF THIS INVENTION: This light looks where the welder looks without any manipulation by the welder as is the situation now. My automatic lighting system greatly reduces welding errors and of course increases production for any welding company. This has been proven over a three month period by testing a prototype helmet at a large factory. Also an actual demonstration shows that when using an auto darkening lens on a welding helmet and with the new lighting system, one can see perfectly in a totally darkened room. Most existing helmets can be updated with a kit and new helmets can be manufactured with this invention as an integral part of the overall helmet. Also other options can be included with this patent pending invention.
SALES POTENTIAL: The Welding Helmet Having An Automatic Lighting System fulfills a real need for millions of people worldwide. Once introduced, consumer and industry acceptance should be enthusiastic and immediate. Marketing will be easy, as it can be sold in discount, department, and sporting goods stores, as well as, mechanic stores and specialty outlets. In addition, it can be attractively featured in trade and industry catalogs, appropriate magazines, on home shopping networks, and over the Internet. It is an exciting, new innovation that opens up a highly profitable product line with unlimited national and international marketing opportunities.
These two photos show the camera looking through the helmet lens from the inside of the helmet the way the welder does. The first photo is with the helmet's Auto Darkening circuit turned on and my Auto Light turned of. As one can see, the auto darkening feature of the helmet does not overcome the room darkness and the welder is actually blind, even with this expensive feature. The second photo has the same set up on, but with my invention, the AUTOMATIC LIGHTING SYSTEM turned on. As one can see there is plenty of light for the welder to view the area before the welding operation begins.
