"Gang Mower"
"My main reason for building these machines was to cut grass cleanly, quickly, and economically. My first machine was the 9 gang 19ft. mower mounted on the green agricultural power unit that was powered by a 51 H.P. Ford gasoline engine. It featured improved Roseman hydraulically driven mowers (used for years at Augusta) on my patented one point suspension system and functioned perfectly from the start.
For 5 years I cut 30 acres of fairways beautifully in approximately 2 - 4 hours, depending on interference from golfers. Since it worked so well I thought it should be available to buy, but the original power unit was extinct so I immediately looked for a different power unit. I finally found an American made diesel powered, 4 wheel drive, articulated, hydrostatic power unit that had enough remote hydraulics to run the mowers. I redesigned the mower, made the hydraulics electric over hydraulic, made it quick hitch (5 minutes or less), and re-patented it."
ADVANTAGES OF THIS INVENTION:
- Compared to large sized pull type mowers this mower is in front of the power unit and does not press the grass down before it is cut, therefore, producing a much better cut and still large sized.
- Compared to smaller lightweight mowers there are advantages. (a) mower size can be varied by adding more mowers and more power to almost infinite size to cutting speeds of 30 - 40 + acres per hour. This is possible because of the patented one point mower suspension. (b) power unit can be unhooked in less than 5 minutes allowing it to be used for other uses and more than 30 implements. (c) mower can be attached to the rear of bi-directional tractors. (d) because of its out front location and easy quick attachment it is very easily maintained.
This invention GANG MOWER, features a mower that when lowered to cutting position allows for approximately 12" of vertical movement on the center mowers and infinite movement on the wing mowers, which run on caster wheels. This allows for ground hugging ability even in ditches. The primary objective of this invention is to provide a mower that is hydraulically driven, out front of the power unit to keep from running over the turf first, providing perfect cuts approximately 1/2", and also being able to disconnect from its power in less than 5 minutes. This allows using the power unit for some of its more than 30 other implements. The hydraulics are all electric over hydraulic and controlled from the tractor seat except the mower reel speed, which if necessary can be easily changed by a lever on the mower frame. These mowers controlled from the tractor seat will travel forward and reverse allowing easy unplugging, if necessary, and quick back lapping.
Inventor Earl Lees was led to the development of his GANG MOWER after realizing that there was nothing like it on the market today. His mower has been field tested cutting as much as 15 acres per hour as a 7 gang and over 20 acres per hour as a 9 gang. Furthermore, this unique mower suspension allows for even more expansion to almost limitless capacities of 40 or more acres per hour with the addition of more mowers and more horsepower. Because of the turf friendly power unit which is articulated and 4 wheel drive, this combination of mower and power unit is extremely attractive to anyone who desires to cut large acreage at a superior cut. It is also very maintenance friendly because of its out front location and quick attach feature. Ultimately, it makes this invention a much sought after product for anyone who would like an easier way to mow those big areas. SALES POTENTIAL:
The GANG MOWER fulfills a real need for millions worldwide. Once introduced, consumer and turf industry acceptance should be enthusiastic and immediate. Marketing will be easy, as it can be sold in discount, farming, and large equipment stores, as well as, in specialty outlets. In addition, it can be attractively offered in trade and industry catalogs, appropriate magazines, and over the Internet. It is an exciting, new and highly profitable product line with unlimited national and international marketing opportunities.
